Ileana Balcu

Ileana Balcu leads teams in creating database web systems for Dulcian, Inc. She helped build systems for Reuters, New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services and the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance. During her pregnancy she had a severe form of preeclampsia (hypertension in pregnancy) and lost a child to the disease. She became an empowered patient while researching and preparing for a second pregnancy (that ended with a healthy baby) and volunteered for the Preeclampsia Foundation as the IT Director. In 2011 she got a Graduate Certificate in Health Information Technology Management from the Stevens Institute of Technology. She is leading the Communications and Social Media team at the Society for Participatory Medicine is a co-chair of the HIMSS Patient Experience Task Force and a member of the HIMSS Social Media Task Force.

Nancy Burghart-Hall, CHCIO

Nancy Burghart-Hall, CHCIO, has 20 years of health IT leadership experience, working in government, not-for-profit, and public healthcare developing strategies to align and implement technology. Ms Burghart-Hall will speak about her journey as a caregiver in the healthcare system—what was and what might have been. She is currently the CIO at MedAmerica/CEP America, a physician medical group staffing emergency, hospitalist and urgent care providers at over 120 hospital locations across the country. Ms. Burghart- Hall has taught and presented on implementing healthcare information systems, governance and strategic planning, and leveraging IT to change healthcare. She is a Certified Healthcare CIO and a member of the Board of Directors of the Northern California HIMSS Chapter. Ms. Burghart-Hall is active in patient advocacy and healthcare policy at the state and national level and her personal mission is to educate patients and caregivers in the importance of managing their personal health information.

Kate T. Christensen, MD

Kate T. Christensen, MD, will lead a panel on the safety and quality implications of digital patient engagement. Kate has been the Medical Director for the Internet Services Group of Kaiser Permanente, and is responsible for clinical oversight and strategy for the healthcare organization’s patient portal, kp.org. She also serves as the Medical Director for the Kaiser Permanente Martinez Hospice Program, as well as the National Physician Lead for Patient-Centered Care for the Care Management Institute. In 2012 she was appointed the chair of the HIMSS eConnecting with Consumers Committee. A general internist as well as hospice and palliative medicine specialist, with a background in medical ethics, Dr. Christensen has published and presented in the U.S. and internationally on the topics of medical ethics, managed care, end-of-life care, and online patient engagement. Dr. Christensen is one of the contributing editors for Engage! Transforming Healthcare Through Digital Patient Engagement, published by HIMSS in March 2013. At the event, Dr. Christensen will be 2 days into her retirement, and we will have the opportunity to celebrate her many contributions to the field of patient engagement and empowerment.

Bing is a pioneer in the area of mobile messaging for healthcare, with a special interest in underserved populations. She co- founded HealthCrowd to apply behavioral change techniques mastered from her prior experience, to the healthcare industry. She was most recently VP & GM at Tribal Fusion, a top 5 global digital ad network. Previously, she served on the management team of consumer shopping start-up, iStorez (acquired). At Netblue (now Epic Media), she tripled their display advertising business to $25M+ while bringing it back into profitability, grew their affiliate revenue by over 10x and was responsible for building hundreds of engaging consumer experiences. In her free time, she advises early-stage media and healthcare IT start-ups. Bing started her career in software development at Hewlett Packard, holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and an MBA from Cornell, where she was an SC Johnson Merit Scholar. She is also a Springboard Enterprises Life Science entrepreneur.

Prior to this, Kerri held the Director of Healthcare Consulting role for the Eastern part of the United States for Dell Services for 9 years. In this role, Kerri lead and managed a group of consulting professionals including quality oversight, engagement oversight, and project directorship in the healthcare information technology market. She also has executed a solution-focused approach with customers on a wide range of service offerings in the Healthcare systems market.

Regina Holliday is an artist, speaker and author in Washington, DC. She writes and speaks about the benefits of health IT and timely data access for patients and families. She painted a series of murals depicting the need for clarity and transparency in medical records. Her late husband, Frederick Allen Holliday II, inspired this advocacy mission, Regina paints and speaks at medical conferences throughout the world, She also began an advocacy movement called “The Walking Gallery.” The Gallery consists of medical providers and advocates who wear patient story paintings on the backs of business suites, The painting that graces the cover of Engage! Transforming Healthcare Through Digital Patient Engagement is entitled “Hope.” It is the jacket image for Jan Oldenburg. This image encapsulates the hope that digital health is providing to patients everywhere. Regina is our keynote speaker and will be painting themes that she hears during the course of the day.

Ron brings a wealth of healthcare knowledge to the company having spent more than 20 years in the industry. His broad experience includes working in the software, financial, and consulting niches of the industry. Prior to joining HealthCare Anytime, Ron spent 13 years with Eide Bailly, a regional CPA and consulting firm, most recently as Director of Business Development for the firm’s healthcare consulting and compliance practices. Before that, Ron spent 10 years working for Dairyland Healthcare Solutions (now Healthland) first as an implementation specialist and then in sales.

Jeffrey D. Pollard, MD

Dr. Pollard joined 23andMe as Director of Medical Affairs in 2012 and is responsible for the company's efforts to advance the integration of personal genomics into the modern healthcare environment through educational initiatives and strategic partnerships with integral members of the healthcare system. He is a double board-certified physician and surgeon with over a decade of clinical experience and has published numerous research articles, contributed to textbooks and trained other surgeons around the nation. Prior to joining 23andMe, Dr. Pollard co-founded and served as Medical Director of Surgical Services for Réviance, a multi-center specialty practice and surgical center. He also served as Medical Expert Network Director for HealthTap, an innovative digital and mobile health platform. Dr. Pollard was also selected as a regional educator by Allergan, Inc. responsible for training healthcare providers in advanced medication delivery techniques to enhance clinical outcomes. Dr. Pollard holds a B.S. in Health Psychology from Duke University and M.D. from Vanderbilt University. He completed both his Internship in General Surgery and Residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Stanford University and fellowship training in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with Calvin M. Johnson, Jr., M.D. at Tulane University. He is a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

TheLizArmy.com now receives more than 12,000 unique visitors each year, and she uses her social media skills to connect with the brain tumor community around the world. In 2012 Liz lobbied Congress on the Cancer Drug Parity Act, and she was appointed as the California Lead Advocate for the National Brain Tumor Society. Liz serves on the UC Davis Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Advisory Board and the medical advisory board for the National Brain Tumor Society. When she's not talking about brain cancer, Liz is a new media communicator and community organizer for Greenwise Joint Venture, a nonprofit focused on growing green jobs in the Sacramento region.

She received her MD from the UCSF School of Medicine where she was involved in Neurosurgical Research investigating Brainstem Tumors. She also received her MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business where she served on the Stanford University Board of Trustees, developed an innovative cardiac catheter through her work with Stanford BioDesign, and led business development and commercialization strategy for early-stage healthcare companies.

Dr. Jordan Shlain is a digital health entrepreneur, practicing primary care doctor, writer and vocal participant in national health policy. Jordan is an active proponent for physicians and patients and is a frequent guest of the Health conferences; he has spoken for the Economist, Rock Health, FutureMed and has recently been invited to Washington DC to speak to policy makers where he sits on the board of the Hope Street Group, a bi-partisan health care think tank. Locally, he was appointed by the Mayor of San Francisco to serve as a commissioner on the Health Service Systems Board of San Francisco - which overseas a $800 million dollar budget and the lives of over 47,000 people. From a primary care point of view, Dr. Shlain has always tested differing models of delivery and payment and has a thriving practice. He was recently president and currently board chair of the national American Acadamy of Private Physicains (AAPP) physician network that is active in experimenting with new delivery model paradigms. He has been named a top 100 health innovator by the popular Healthspottr organization and frequently writes for the Huffington Post and has been feature on the The Health Care Blog. Dr. Shlain is an active investor and advisor to many digital health companies including; Doximity, Practice Fusion, Physicians Interactive and others.

Previously Dr. Singer was the ambulatory lead in a health system-wide Epic implementation. Brad Tritle, CIPP, will be leading a panel discussion on Social Media in Healthcare. Mr. Tritle is the Director of Business Development for Vitaphone USA, and co-founder of eHealth Nexus and Health-e Republic. At Vitaphone, he is responsible for all aspects of the Chronic Disease Management Market for remote patient monitoring services and devices. He is or has been a consultant and advisor to Informative Graphics/IGC, eHealthTrust, Cox Business, 360Vantage, ONC’s State HIE Consumer Innovation Challenge, and other organizations. For three years, Mr. Tritle headed Arizona’s health IT non-profit, Arizona Health-eConnection, focusing on HIE, EHR, e-prescribing, and PHR adoption. Mr. Tritle serves on the HIMSS eConnecting with Consumers Committee and the Arizona Telemedicine Council, chairs the HIMSS Social Media Task Force and Health Record Banking Alliance Business Model Committee, and hosts a weekly Internet radio show at Engage4Health.com. Susan Woods, MD, MPH, is an internist and consumer informaticist at the Portland VA Medical Center and Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University, Departments of Medicine and Medical Informatics. At the Veterans Health Administration, Office of Informatics & Analytics, she brings the Patient Voice into the design of health IT services, focusing on shared health records and patient-generated data. Dr. Woods is a principal investigator in the eHealth QUERI, a VA virtual research consortium. Previously on the boards of the Society for Participatory Medicine and the Society of Behavioral Medicine, she promotes consumer health technology as a way to engage patients and families in their care, and enhance the patient experience. She encourages innovation and participatory care on her blog, Shared Health Data.
