Opening Keynote: State of the Healthcare Union

Vanila Singh, MD

Acting Regional Health Administrator, Region 9 (CA, AZ, NV, HI, 6 Pacific Islands)

Dr. Vanila Singh is the Chief Medical officer/CMO of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/HHS. Dr. Singh is also Chairperson of the Pain Management Best Practices Inter-agency Task Force. In addition, she is also Acting Regional Health Administrator over our area, Region 9 (California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, 6 pacific islands). Dr. Singh has also been at Stanford School of Medicine for 15 years as Clinical Associate Professor in pain medicine and is considered an international expert on the opioid crisis. She has a background in molecular and cell biology, economics, health policy and education. She is skilled and passionate about patient care, precision medicine, education, public health, epidemiology, and technology. Dr. Singh has been active in national medical organizations, serving as the Vice Chair of the National Physicians Council on Health Policy; an editorial board member of the Pain Physician Journal for the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians; and a member of the California Medical Association’s (CMA) House of Delegates. She also served on the CMA’s Council on Ethical, Legal and Judicial Affairs, and more recently, as a member of its Subcommittee on Health Information Technology. Dr. Singh was an invited faculty speaker and member of the Scientific Planning Committee for the 2017 national meeting of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia. She is involved in the Santa Clara County Medical Association as Vice President of Professional Conduct.

John Chambers

John Chambers is the founder and CEO of JC2Ventures. In his role, Chambers focuses on helping disruptive startups from around the world build and scale, while also promoting the broader development of startup nations and a startup world. He invests in companies across categories and geographies that are leading market transitions, such as Aspire, Dedrone, OpenGov, Pindrop, Privoro, SparkCognition, Sprinklr, and Uniphore. He also serves on the Board of Directors for OpenGov, Pindrop, and Sprinklr. Chambers is also the Chairman of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) and was appointed Global Ambassador of the French Tech by President Emmanuel Macron of France in January of 2018. In addition to investing in and mentoring startups, Chambers promotes entrepreneurship, gender equality, and accelerating overall new business creation, as he believes that startups will be the core driver of economic growth and job creation in the Digital Age. Chambers has received numerous awards for his leadership, including being named the number two “Best-Performing CEOs in the World” in 2015 from Harvard Business Review, the Edison Achievement Award for Innovation, one of Barron’s’ “World’s Best CEOs,” “CEO of the Year” by Chief Executive Magazine, Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People,” the “Best Boss in America” by 20/20, and one of BusinessWeek’s “Top 25 Executives Worldwide.” Prior to founding JC2 Ventures, Chambers spent 25+ years with Cisco, serving as CEO, Chairman and Executive Chairman. He currently holds the title of Chairman Emeritus with the organization.

Sherri Douville

Sherri Douville is CEO and board member for Medigram, the mobile healthcare communication and data science platform designed to work in difficult network environments such as hospitals. At Medigram, Sherri leads a world-class team of technology, HealthIT, business, and physician executives. The Medigram team's passion is focused on the benefits of reducing time to treatment, increasing treatment success and delivering a better healthcare worker and patient experience. This is through resilient, instant mobile communications that increase health system revenues by leveraging instant conversational insights. Ms. Douville has 15 years of healthcare experience in product sales and marketing (Johnson & Johnson), and as a healthcare tech product and business consultant. Ms. Douville is a frequent speaker at healthcare conferences and has been quoted in Healthcare, Health IT industry, and mainstream IT media outlets. Ms. Douville advises Health IT, AI, and Genetics startups both in the U.S. and in Europe. She and her husband Dr. Arthur Douville together, advise a number of Non-Profits addressing unmet needs in both healthcare and education. Ms. Douville serves on the Board of NorCal Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Ms. Douville has a bachelor’s of science degree in biophysics from Santa Clara University where she serves on the Board of Fellows. She has also obtained three certificates in electrical engineering, computer science and IoT through MIT.

Panel Discussion: More Than an Afterthought: Why Security Must Keep Pace with Transformation

Jason Johnson has been in technology for twelve years and has spent the last eight years with hospitals in Northern California. Through the years, he has overseen several specialized areas including Citrix implementations, Help Desk management, software rollouts, data center migrations, telecommunications, UC implementations, network upgrades, and ambulatory clinic overhauls.

This breadth of experience provides Jason a unique lens with which to view information security. As Information Security Officer for Marin General Hospital, he has been responsible for rolling out a formal information security program from the ground up. This included passage of organizational security policies, implementing vulnerability management processes, creation of everyday procedures and security awareness training, and implementing a MSSP.

Jason also serves on the Board for Directors for HIMSS Northern California as Programs Chair. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration, CISSP and PMP certifications, Six Sigma Yellow Belt, as well as CAHIMS and a BLS certifications.

Patrick Phelan is chief information security officer of UCSF, one of the premier academic medical centers in the country. He is responsible for the security strategy for systems supporting the research, education, and clinical missions of the institution. A 20-year IT veteran, he is a member of several professional organizations, holds CISSP, CEH, CISM certifications, and a B.S. in computer science from UCLA.

As the Chief Information Security Officer for El Camino Hospital, Brian Kreitzer oversees the strategy and operations of their cybersecurity program.  He and his team are responsible for the cybersecurity of El Camino’s two hospital systems, affiliates, and the clinics that interface with the hospital.  Prior to this role, Brian was the Chief Information Security Officer for UCLA Health where he oversaw cybersecurity of the three hospital system with ~900 beds and ~150 owned clinics as well as the David Geffin School of Medicine.

Jonathan Manis

Jonathan Manis, a former clinician and veteran health care information technology leader, served most recently as the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Sutter Health of Sacramento, CA. Manis is a seasoned CIO with more than 25 years of IT leadership experience. He joined Sutter Health in 2006 from Illinois-based Provena Health, where he served as System Vice President of Administrative Services and CIO. Prior to Provena, Manis served as Vice President of Information Services for Advocate Healthcare in Chicago and Chief Technology Officer for Sterling Health of Miami, FL. A decorated combat arms officer, Manis attended the United States Naval Academy and Auburn University. He holds a Master’s Degree in Computer Science/ Information Systems Management from the Naval Academy. Jon is a regularly featured speaker regarding technology and information systems management and he has authored multiple professional articles on the topics of information technology management and support function leadership.
