Healthcare Advancement Zones

Northern California Healthcare Issues in Sub-Urbanized and Rural Areas

California has over 5.2 million people who live in Sub-Urbanized and Rural Areas and tend to be older and poorer and have more chronic health conditions. Urban density and high cost of living continue to push people towards the state interiors, deserts, and mountain forests where there are fewer resources to address prevalent health problems such as: mental health, maternal-child health, aging and senior services, comprehensive medical services, and social services.

The scarcity of hospitals and health clinics in rural areas forces patients with chronic and/or complex medical needs to travel long distances to receive the care they need. Many people delay care for their chronic conditions and even put off filling prescriptions because of the distance and difficulty to reach a facility or pharmacy. The ability to have a facility, and the healthcare professionals that it attracts, makes a difference between whether these people live or die, whether they control their chronic illnesses or not.

While telemedicine has been helpful, many people in rural areas lack broadband capabilities that would enable them to participate in telemedicine. Additionally, wildfires remain yearly threats to rural inhabitants and their already limited access to healthcare services.

Healthcare Advancement Zones

The Healthcare Advancement Zones are four Sub-Urbanized and rural areas facing many of the challenges that we mentioned above. We have identified the following zones that could benefit from innovations in healthcare. To encourage you to support healthcare innovation in these areas you will receive a NorCal Bonus Point on your Scorecard if your innovation addresses any Healthcare Advancement Zone issues.

  • North State Coastal Zone – Inland Zone that includes: Humboldt, Arcadia, Weed, and Shasta areas
  • Mendocino Zone – Napa and Lake Counties Zone that includes: Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa, and Lake Counties areas
  • Sierra Foothills Zone – Chico, Butte, eastward CA Tahoe areas
  • NorCal Delta and Central Valley Zone – Lodi, Stockton, Fresno, San Joaquin areas

  • Environment Health: Safe Clean water in rural communities, Arial spraying - agriculture communities health, industrial air pollution in dense populations, toxins and vectors abatement in Section 8 housing.
