Spring 2017 ♦ HIMSS 2017 Conference - Chapter Highlights
By Jim Bloedau, BS-MT, RRT, CPHIMS, President Elect, Innovation Chair, Northern California HIMSS
Our chapter was well represented at the 2017 HIMSS Conference in Orlando on February 19-23. From speaking engagements and Fellowship and Leadership awards to one of the best attended receptions, our board continues to get more deeply involved and become increasingly respected at the national level. As usual, board members unanimously reported that if you weren’t walking at least 15,000 steps per day, you weren’t taking full advantage of what the conference offers. Here are a few highlights from those who attended.
The Chapter Leadership Workshop: For over two hours on the Sunday before the opening of the conference, Nick Steinbach, Jim Bloedau and chapter leaders from the fifty-five chapters shared their best practices and worst worries. Other chapters are now starting their own MeetUp and CPHIMS scholarship programs after hearing about our Northern California Program at the two-day Leadership Conference held last July in Chicago. Our use of the Planning Pod for event management attracted many inquires after the session and was recognized as the session’s most helpful innovation suggestion. Northern California continues to be recognized as a leading innovator in chapter leadership – stay tuned, we’ve got several more programs and events in development.

Speaking Engagements: Santosh Mohan and Samir Batra represented our chapter board well during their respective speaking engagements. Santosh hosted a full-day pre-conference symposium on IT-enabled innovations fueling new care models and he additionally presented as many as six sessions during the conference on a variety of topics ranging from User Experience and Customer Experience to Connected Health and Primary Care Innovation. Samir presented on how to build and deliver delightful IT-enabled patient experiences—a topic that our chapter will be exploring more deeply during the upcoming ePatient Summit that we are hosting in collaboration with the El Camino Hospital on April 4, 2017.
Chapter Reception: NTT Data hosted the NorCal reception at their booth on the exhibit floor. Sold out weeks in advance, the 100 attendees overflowed out into the aisles with many attending stating that it was the best chapter reception of the conference and the best ever for the chapter. It wouldn’t have been so without the dedicated work and organizational skills of Nick Steinbach and the fabulous event management of Michelle Heimann and Julie Post.

Awards Gala: Board members attended this elegant evening honoring the “Best and Brightest Minds” in HIT. Santosh Mohan was awarded the prestigious Founder’s Leadership Award this year for his significant contributions to the industry and was named a Fellow of HIMSS. Karen Boruff PMP, MBA was awarded the HIMSS Northern California Chapter Scholarship. Congratulations to both! The evening also allowed us to network with our Southern California Chapter brethren and liaison with Russ Branzell, President and CEO of CHIME.
