Summer 2017 Newsletter - Message from the President

Hello Northern California HIMSS Membership!

Thank you for tuning in to another edition of our quarterly newsletter! As I mentioned in our last edition, our board had been hard at work on several events, which I am happy to report, went off without a hitch. Our 5th annual ePatient Summit brought close to 300 attendees to the Technology Museum of San Jose where we had the pleasure of partnering with El Camino Hospital to bring a unique experience to attendees through a dynamic speaker lineup combined with hands on workshops addressing the positioning of patients both as “consumers” and as “partners.” The goal of our committee chairs, Santosh Mohan and Samir Batra, was to discuss disruptive ideas and the impact of IT, while providing actionable takeaways on building both a 21st century consumer strategy and an exceptional patient experience. They were able to accomplish all of that and then some, as the feedback has been phenomenal.

In addition to our ePatient Summit, we held our annual State HIT Day in collaboration with the Southern California Chapter of HIMSS on May 3 in Sacramento. Every year, we organize a speaker lineup followed by visits to the State Capitol to lobby for pieces of legislation impacting California and its healthcare initiatives. This year, in our visits to the Capitol, the “asks” were to Support Greater Access to Pharmacists and to Support Secure Practitioner Access to CURES Database. For more information on these topics and how you can get involved, please visit our website and explore our Advocacy page,

In addition, we had the pleasure of hosting State Senator Ed Hernandez, the Chair of the California Senate Committee on Health, and received a confirmation of our proclamation from Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom. Thank you to our incredible Advocacy Committee Chairs, Shanti Wilson from our NorCal Chapter and John Conklin from the SoCal Chapter, for making such an impact and bringing an incredible event to our membership for the entire State of California.

As if we were not busy enough, our chapter collaborated with an incredible group of Women in Healthcare IT to bring the first annual Women in Healthcare IT Event, “Path to Success,” which was held in San Francisco at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio. The event sold out weeks prior, and I had the distinct pleasure of participating on an amazing panel of women who are pioneering and shaping the healthcare IT space as we know it today. In addition, we had several breakout sessions with no-holds-barred discussions about achieving success as women in HIT with thought provoking topics applicable to women in all stages of their careers. Stay tuned for future events of this nature, as we are already in the planning stages for 2018!

As our fiscal year starts to wind down and we begin the planning for FY18, which begins on July 1, we examine the year in review to continue to bring thought provoking programs to our chapter.  As always, if you are interested in volunteering, sponsoring, speaking, or have ideas on topics, please let us know! We encourage as much feedback as possible from our membership as we want to ensure our programs continue to add value to your already busy lives.

Please join us on July 13 as we wrap up the year at Rosenblum Cellars in Jack London Square in Oakland. It is an opportunity to network and socialize with like-minded healthcare IT individuals in a beautiful setting with wine and delicious appetizers.

It is a pleasure to continue to serve this chapter, and I am looking forward to what FY18 will bring!

Please feel free to let me know any thoughts or feedback you may have. I can be reached at Stay tuned for announcements on future events and opportunities to volunteer. Have a wonderful Summer!

Best regards,

Stevie Ryan
